When I first began training with Gunner, the trainer pulled no punches.

He told me Gunner was one of the most dominant dogs he had ever worked with — and that I was not yet the strong, confident handler Gunner required.

That was hard to hear.

I had spent decades leading organizations, building teams, making difficult decisions, and navigating high-pressure environments. Yet here was this powerful Rottweiler exposing something leadership titles never could:

Gunner required me to become a better handler. More observant. More intentional. More consistent. More aware of what I was communicating before I ever said a word.

Through training, long walks, Search and Rescue work, obstacle courses, and countless hours together, I began to recognize something unexpected.

I wasn't simply training Gunner.

Gunner was training me.

The lessons weren't theoretical anymore. I could see them playing out in real time — in how I gave direction, responded under pressure, corrected mistakes, built trust, and adjusted when something wasn't working.

The lessons weren't just for Gunner.

They were for me.

Gunner doesn’t care about organizational charts or leadership theory. He’s never attended a leadership seminar. Yet he consistently demonstrates many of the qualities we expect from exceptional leaders.

He stays present. He builds trust. He communicates without words. He notices what others miss. He adapts. He perseveres. He resets and tries again.

Gunner reminded me that leadership isn’t defined by a title. It’s revealed in how we show up, how we respond, and what others experience from us.
